The Age of Distraction: A Battle for the Soul Part 1 of 2
In a thoughtful piece titled “Educating for Attention in the Age of Distraction,” “Dustin Webster highlights a growing awareness in our culture: we are losing the ability to pay attention. Institutions are beginning to recognize that attention is not just a skill—but a virtue tied to human flourishing. Drawing from thinkers like Simone Weil, he echoes a profound idea: attention is deeply connected to love”.
And in that, he is right. But like many modern insights, it is a half-truth…pointing toward something deeper, yet stopping short of the full reality.
Because Scripture reveals that attention is not merely a pathway to love…it is a reflection of worship. Let’s talk.
The Spirit Behind the Distraction – Yes… I said… Spirit
The world describes distraction as a technological problem, a cultural issue, or even a neurological shift. But the Bible reveals something more: distraction is often spiritual in nature.
The enemy has always worked not just through destruction, but through diversion. If he cannot pull you into outright rebellion, he will settle for something far more subtle: keeping you preoccupied, fragmented, and unfocused on the things that matter most.
Think about it:
- Martha wasn’t doing something sinful—she was distracted (Luke 10:40).
- Peter didn’t fall because there was no power—he sank because he lost focus (Matthew 14:30).
- Israel didn’t always reject God outright—they simply “forgot” Him (Deuteronomy 8:11).
Distraction is not always loud. Often, it is quiet… respectable… even productive.
But its end is the same: distance from God.
Half Truths vs. Whole Truth
The secular world is beginning to rediscover three ideas that Webster highlights: patience, reality orientation, and just attention.
These are good. Necessary, even. But without God, they are incomplete.
- Patience without God becomes endurance without purpose.
- Reality orientation without God becomes truth defined by perception.
- Just attention without God becomes morality without a foundation.
The Bible takes these same ideas and anchors them in eternity:
- “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
- “Set your minds on things above…” (Colossians 3:2)
- “Fixing our eyes on Jesus…” (Hebrews 12:2)
The difference is this:
The world says, “Pay attention to flourish.”
God says, “Fix your attention on Me, and you will find life.”
Doesn’t What Has Your Attention… Have You?
Do you think attention is neutral. No Way Jose!
Whatever consistently holds your attention… begins to shape your thoughts.
Your thoughts shape your desires.
Your desires shape your direction.
And your direction determines your destiny.
This is why Scripture repeatedly calls us to guard our focus…guard our thoughts.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)
In today’s world, guarding your heart means guarding your attention.
Because attention has become “the currency of influence”…and many are spending it on things that cannot satisfy and truly what they can’t afford. Think about your currency of influence…
Didn’t Jesus Always Call Us to Refocus or to stay focused?
So what does it look like to live differently? Certainly, not by withdrawing from the world…but by becoming intentional within it. Here is where the gospel meets practicality:
1. Practice Stillness Daily
Not just silence from noise—but stillness before God.
Even 10 minutes of undistracted time in His presence recalibrates your soul.
2. Train Your Attention on Truth
Open Scripture not to check a box…but to encounter God.
Slow down. Sit with it. Let it confront and reshape you.
3. Eliminate What Competes for Your Heart
Not everything is sinful…but not everything is helpful.
Some distractions must be removed if you are to move… forward.
4. Re-engage in Meaningful Work
God has called each of us to participate in HIS mission.
Distraction thrives where purpose is absent.
5. Mentor the Distracted
This generation is not weak…they are overwhelmed.
They don’t just need correction…they need guidance.
Invite them into conversations, into presence, into truth.
My brothers and sisters, we are not just living in an age of distraction. We are living in clear moments of decision. But we can only hold them with our spiritual eyes opened. If it isn’t intentional, it won’t happen.
Will we drift with the current of endless noise…
Or will we become people who choose attention?
not just as a discipline, but as devotion?
Attention…as a devotion? I have never heard of such a thing.
Because in the end, attention is more than focus.
It is allegiance.
And what you give your attention to…
you ultimately give your life to.
