Why Did God Bring Me Here?

Session Two — Why Did God Bring Me Here?

Last time, we talked about crossing the threshold. We talked about those moments when God calls us out of
what is familiar and into something new. Maybe you took that first step toward God.
Maybe you stepped into a new relationship, a new season, a new beginning, or even a new freedom.
But once you’ve crossed that threshold, there’s an important question we have to ask:
Why did God bring me here?

This last week we welcomed 100 new men into our Men’s group.
It was exciting for us but was chaotic for them. It was so loud and more than a little crazy,
and Satan will use that to discourage people from returning.

“Wow, this is too much for me.” But wait… don’t let him win the fight so easily.

We spend much of our lives trying to answer that question in our own way. We go to school, build résumés, find careers, chase opportunities, buy houses, raise families and try to build a successful life. None of those things are wrong. In fact, many of them are good things. But somewhere along the way, a much bigger question has to confront us: What did God put me here to do?

That’s a much bigger question than, “What do I want to do?” We can spend years trying to figure out what career we want, where we want to live, what we want to accomplish and what kind of life we want to build. And there’s nothing wrong with planning. But if we’re following Jesus, eventually we have to ask a different question: God, what is Your purpose for my life?

And sometimes that purpose begins with a threshold. God asks us to step away from what is comfortable and into something we don’t fully understand. And here’s the part we don’t always like:
Crossing the threshold doesn’t mean everything on the other side is going to be comfortable.

In fact, sometimes the first thing we experience after saying yes to God is uncertainty. Think about those 100 men who walked into our group this week. For some of them, that may have been a huge step. Maybe they had never been in a men’s group before. Maybe they didn’t know anybody. Maybe they weren’t sure what to expect. And then they walked through the door and—WOW! It was loud. It was crowded. It was chaotic. It was more than a little crazy.

And Satan knows exactly how to use moments like that. He doesn’t necessarily have to convince you that God isn’t real. Sometimes all he has to do is make you uncomfortable. “This isn’t for you.” “You don’t belong here.” “This is too much.” “Just don’t come back.” And if we’re not careful, we can mistake discomfort for direction. We can think, “Maybe I made a mistake.”

But what if you didn’t? What if the discomfort is simply part of being somewhere new? Think about almost any new beginning in your life. The first day at a new job can be uncomfortable. The first day at a new school can be uncomfortable. Starting a new relationship can be uncomfortable. Walking into a room full of people you don’t know can be uncomfortable. But uncomfortable doesn’t mean wrong. Sometimes you just need to stay long enough to discover what God is doing.

That’s exactly what we see throughout Scripture. God called Abraham to leave what he knew and go somewhere God would show him. Abraham didn’t have the entire map. He had a promise. God called Moses out of the wilderness and into a purpose he never imagined for himself. Jesus called Peter away from his fishing nets. Peter knew how to fish. He didn’t know how to become an apostle. But Jesus wasn’t asking Peter to understand everything. He was asking Peter to follow Him.

And that’s often what God asks of us. We want to know the destination before we take the first step. God often says, “Take the step, and I’ll show you the next one.” That’s faith. Faith isn’t having all the answers. Faith is trusting the One who does.

So maybe you’re in a season right now where you’re asking, “Why did God bring me here?” Maybe you don’t understand your circumstances. Maybe something you thought would be easy has turned out to be difficult. Maybe you stepped into something new and you’re already wondering if you should step back out.

Before you do, stop and ask a different question: “God, what are You trying to show me here?” Maybe He’s teaching you patience. Maybe He’s building your faith. Maybe He’s bringing people into your life who will become important to you.
Maybe He’s preparing you for something you can’t see yet.
Or maybe He’s doing something in you before He does something through you.

We often think God’s purpose is primarily about what we’re going to accomplish. But sometimes God’s greatest work is about who we’re becoming. The threshold isn’t the destination. It’s the beginning.

That’s why I want to encourage those 100 men who joined us this week. Don’t let one night determine your future. If it was loud, come back. If it was uncomfortable, come back. If you didn’t know anybody, come back. If you walked out thinking, “I’m not sure about this,” come back.

Because you may have walked through those doors thinking you were simply joining a men’s group. But God may have had something much bigger in mind. You may have been looking for a place to belong, while God was preparing a place for you to grow. You may have been looking for friends, while God was preparing brothers. You may have thought you were just trying something new, while God was beginning a new season in your life.

Don’t turn around too quickly. Satan would love nothing more than to take an uncomfortable moment and convince you to walk away from something God intended to use. Don’t give him that victory.

You crossed the threshold for a reason. You may not know what that reason is yet. And that’s okay. You don’t have to understand everything today. You just have to be willing to take the next step.

Because sometimes we don’t discover why God brought us somewhere until we’ve stayed long enough to see what He wants to do. So if you’re standing on the other side of a threshold today, don’t be afraid of what you don’t understand. Don’t confuse discomfort with God’s absence. Don’t confuse difficulty with a wrong decision. And don’t let Satan make your decision for you.

Instead, ask: “God, why did You bring me here?” And then be willing to wait for the answer.

Because the God who called you across the threshold hasn’t abandoned you on the other side. He brought you there for a reason.

Stay long enough to discover what it is.

Questions to Consider

  1. What threshold have I recently crossed, and what has made me question whether I made the right decision?
  2. Am I allowing discomfort or uncertainty to cause me to turn around before God has had a chance to show me why He brought me here?
  3. What might God be trying to teach me, change in me, or prepare me for in this season?
