“He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” God’s Broken Heart.
In our previous session together I asked when was the last time your heart broke for someone else? Like God’s breaks for you and me. This is Part II
John 1:11 says, “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” And so He wept. This broke His heart, and it still does. Unbelief and rejection break God’s heart because
He knows the consequences.
Personally, the last time something or someone broke my heart was about some cancer or a car wreck,
or some lingering illness. I think of these seemingly permanent life events that happen to people.
But God’s broken heart speaks of so much more than me or my realm of reality.
He talks about the unbelief and rejection of his son… He gave His son to die and ALL those people,
those millions and trillions rejected him. God wants us to see the consequences…,
worse than any cancer, abortion, or murder…it means eternity in hell. Eternity without joy or hope because they would not see the Love of God himself.
It says He wants to heal you and their broken heart which includes our worldly corrupted ways of thinking… and believing. Like the download of a virus onto your computer that corrupts your operating system. The Bible is our Mcaffee virus killer, keeping us running and thinking uprightly before God. Reading His 7,000 promises over them. How many have you downloaded for your protection and His glory? Each one is our medicine to clean out the plague from our arteries that restricts or completely blocks the flow of God’s love and blessings to each of us.
When we do that, Ezekiel 26:36 says, “I will give you a new heart, I will put a new spirit in you, I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” He will give us all a new way of thinking. He will open our eyes to see the truth about all this nonsense called sin, happening around us. And then guide us by the still waters.
Does your heart break for those who are openly disobedient to God? We are to be transformed into the image of Jesus…more and more, day by day. What is Jesus doing? He sits at the right hand of God living to make intercession for us. Rom 8:34 As that happens our hearts too will be broken over the brokenness we see. We are called to pray and make intercession for them as Jesus does for all of us… Is that happening with you?
The Holy Spirit wants to move them and each of us, to greater obedience to God. Ezekiel 26:27 says,
“I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.”
There’s the evidence of a broken and changed heart.
Your sin, my sin, Adam & Eve’s sin breaks God’s heart! Every choice to not believe the truth, worship wrong things, or act selfishly grieves our heavenly Father. It’s not that our sinful choices surprised God or caught Him off guard, but rather that He was saddened by our choice to leave Him for other things.
We have put other Gods before him. Ex 20:3
His Holy Spirit has planted a band of regret and sorrow in our hearts to begin to see the depravity of our thinking. And like the bands of a storm, his conviction comes in waves so we can choose… so we can see how these things break the heart of God…so you can feel the conviction of your own sin,
AND see the fruitlessness of others, so it breaks your heart too.
Today, the Holy Spirit is reminding us of what God has asked us to do. Jesus said, “But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you” (John 14:26, NLT).
I think experiencing a broken heart has everything to do with what you see.
Too many do not see the depravity of the world around them or even in themselves.
It has become the norm. Everyone accepts that! And we see through scales that have calcified over our eyes restricting God’s light, truth, and love.
They and we in some cases have traded the riches of God
for the counterfeits of the world that will only bring death.
The Holy Spirit promises to guide you into all truth and teach you what the broken heart of God looks like and to make your heart so tender to him that these things in you, and what you see around you, will break your heart also. John 16:13 tells us, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears,
and he will tell you what is yet to come.”
Let me encourage you today that as your heart changes before God, “The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” ––Zephaniah 3:17
