How to Fill the Void In Your Heart
(I’m not sure who this post is for, but these thoughts were on my heart to share. I pray they bless, challenge, and inspire those who read it.)
As my husband, Robert, and I continue our journey of reading one chapter in the Bible every morning, today’s companion commentary by The Warehouse’s Hank Workman on Song of Solomon
Chapter 3 said this:
“We can do everything under the sun to fill the void of our hearts, the ache we have for feeling complete. But it is not until Jesus comes into our lives that joy is found.”
Talk about an opportunity for reflection and introspection.
If you’re up to the challenge, take a moment to evaluate what you’re filling the void in your heart with and where you put your focus consistently.
The answers could be endless, from work to people to hobbies to things to food or drinks.
The Truth of the Matter
Here’s what I know to be true: The only thing that can honestly fill that void is building a personal relationship with Jesus. You can’t do that by occasionally turning to Him when you need something. It happens by spending time with Him, reading His word, praying, and inviting Him into every aspect of your life.
If you’ve read this far, you may be rolling your eyes or scoffing at me, thinking what I’m proposing is ridiculous or off the mark.
Real-Life Examples
But here are a few personal applications to demonstrate what I mean:
As an avid scuba diver, I start talking to the Lord about what I will see in the ocean’s depths as I sit on the back of the dive boat or wait at the shoreline for high tide. And I ask Him to “show me what He’s got.”
While that may sound crazy to you, I’ve done this often enough to experience and see incredible sights He guides me to and knows others don’t see.
It is an amazing experience to have the Creator of the Universe point out the things He has created. OR as I sit at my desk before I start my work day, begin working on a project, or hop on a call—I invite Him into each aspect of what I’m doing. I ask Him to guide me, direct me, and give me His perspective.
Trust me when I say that every project and conversation turns out vastly different than doing it on my strength.
Transformational Challenge
If you’ve known me for a while, you’re aware that I haven’t always lived my life this way.
And while I’m far from perfect, living life the way I described is a complete game-changer that brings about transformation in ways you cannot imagine.
If you’re looking for a way to fill that void in your life, instead of trying to fill it with other people, places, or things–consider doing what I described.
I promise you have everything to gain.
Don’t believe me? Try it. And let me know how it goes.
