King David wasn’t qualified to be King. How are we like him?
I love the story of King David. But, How could God love David so much when he made so many mistakes?
Have you ever compared your shortcomings to David’s? Let’s take a look!
So why did he God choose him?
It is a critical answer, I think we seldom reflect on it.
So what do we know?
- Despite his flaws, David was known for his deep faith and devotion to God, expressing this through the Psalms, which are often considered prayers and songs of praise to God.
- The bible clearly portrays and speaks of God as a loving and merciful God who desires a relationship with humanity, even when we make mistakes.
(These are true but I am looking for something that has to do with our part?) What is it? - It’s true that Jehovah is not looking for perfect people.
- It’s true David’s life was about living for God…HIS name and HIS fame…while King Saul was living for his fame and his reputation,
But there is another key reason God loved David so much. Have you figured it out yet?
OK… despite his significant mistakes, God loved David because of his genuine repentance and deep relationship with God, demonstrating that God’s love is not contingent on a person’s perfect behavior or giftedness but on their heart and willingness to turn back to him; the Bible often refers to David as a “man after God’s own heart”.
How are you like David? Are you quick to fall to your knees in repentance and remorse? Has your life become about you like Saul or is it daily about HIM?
I don’t know what your daily existence is about. I do know that it is so easy to make your life about you vs God. Too easy to squeeze him out…there is just not enough room at the Inn. The difference for David was every time he sinned, he repented bitterly and came back to God!
But David didn’t get off scott free… there were serious consequences. One of the great dreams/desires and loves of his life was to build a tabernacle for Jehovah. But because of his adulterous relationship with Bathsheba and the bloodshed of her husband Uriah he was denied that honor, that privilege, and the joy of building the temple. But God being forever faithful swore to David and all of his children…you and me! Psalm 132: 11-12 “One of the sons of your body I will set on your throne. If your sons keep my covenant and my testimonies that I shall teach them, their sons also forever shall sit on your throne.” ‘
- When we examine David we realize he didn’t have any real qualifications to be King. Being in an election year, we can clearly see he had no traditional standards of royal qualification.
- He was a young shepherd boy with no political experience. He tended sheep not governing a nation. He lacked a royal lineage. He was the youngest in his family.
- He had no miliary prowess.
- He was not qualified any more than we are… to be called by God…To be a child of God.
It is all about God’s Grace all about God’s Mercy.
Clearly we aren’t qualified either to be chosen by God, but David has much all of us CAN possess.
- Faith: Surely David’s life demonstrates his faith and the history that God can do the impossible.
- Humility: Do you recall he declined the armor of King Saul when he went to fight Goliath and he would not raise his sword against the King.
- Obedience: I believe it was his foremost quality as King.
- Repentance: Clearly this was David.
- Prayer: He prayed for restoration.
- Watched his words and his heart:
David was clearly anointed to be King, but we have something he did not have …all the time.
David’s desire was to build Gods temple. After Pentecost We Became God’s temple.
Roman 8. David had an anointing that many of the judges and prophets had in the OT. The Holy Spirit was active in their lives and gave them insite, direction and even empowered them but they did not have the presence of the Holy Spirit that we do today. Sadly, too many choose to not walk in His power.
God loved David as a man after His own heart… because he demonstrated his faith and was committed to following the Lord. Yes, his faith was tested on a grand scale, and he failed at times. But after his sin…every time… he sought and received the Lord’s forgiveness. In the final analysis, David loved God’s Law and sought to follow it exactly.
We can all be sons and daughters after Gods heart. God made each of us uniquely different. Be happy the way God made you. Dedicate who you are to him. Accept him as your Sovereign Lord, Savior and Master. We are all different, and cannot all be “toes,” “fingers,” “eyes,“ or “ears”, etc. nor, can we all be apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. He has a unique plan for you. Accept Jesus… but then you must dedicate your life to His Glory. Repent quickly like David and he will teach you to love beyond your wildest imaginations. He loves you the same way he loved David.
Finally, We cannot allow God to leave our perspective. Remember.
This is the day lord has made! That alone causes us to be an encourager of others.
David was chased and beat up for 13 yrs but he was the biggest of encouragers !
Put on garments of praise… but we must put it on and the promise is
“Darkness must flee”. That’s what he did !
Set your mind on God. Mistakes will happen…battles will come…but we will win!
