What is the Immutable Truth of who God is? What does that mean?
A business sent me an advertisement about “Immutable Truths”. Those words struck me so hard.
The world has its answer, and of course, the bible has its truth.
Definition – Immutable: adjective
1. unchanging over time or unable to be changed. “an immutable fact” Do I really know the depth of what that means? So I went digging. I hope you enjoy my scavenging.
Google said: that death, taxes, and the laws of physics are immutable.
The Bible says that the Immutability or Unchangeability of God is an attribute that “God is unchanging in his character, will, and covenant promises.” The Westminster Shorter Catechism says that “[God] is a spirit, whose being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness,
and truth are infinite, eternal, and unchangeable.”
Scripture not only says God is immutable but also says he is infinite (Ps 147:5;
Rom 11:33; Eph 1:19; 2:7) says He is immeasurable, unlimited not merely in size but in his very being. He has no limitations; He is absolute perfection.
James chapter 1:17 puts it like this: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
But there is One who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Heb 13:8
Question 1: Why do we pray if God is immutable? Unchanging?
We do not pray to change God’s mind, to get him on our side, or to inform God of things he does not already know. We pray in order to trustingly lay hold of the goodness that God has already ordained for and promised to his beloved children in Christ (Rom 8:28)
Question 2: How do we know God is Immutable and unchanging?
The Scripture reveals that; (1) God is immutable (Hebrews 6:18); (2) He is infallible (Joshua 21:45); (3) He is incorruptible (Romans 1:23; Revelation 4:8); (4) He is infinite (Isaiah 40:28); (5) He is incomprehensible (Psalm 139:1-6); (6) He is invisible (1 Timothy 1:17); and, (7) He is immortal (1 Timothy 6:15,16).
Question 3: What makes God unchangeable?
The truth is…this is over my head. It is hard for me to get my head around this, even though I have done the research to bring logic to my confusion.
– He has never had a beginning, and He’ll never have an end.
– God is perfectly good, holy, & just, and therefore cannot change to become less so.
– God is eternal and exists outside of time, meaning He is not subject to the changes that occur within time. He created time for us.
– Since God is already perfect, He does not need to change or evolve to become better.
Have you ever thought about this before? How deep did your curiosity take you?
The world…our world is constantly changing. The world is not flat. We won’t fall off. There are countless constellations, no matter how many new ones we discover. We keep learning and evolving, but God is always there. He created everything. I believe the light he created is still advancing at the speed of light. It has never stopped since the millennium of time.
Think about it. His immutability, his unchangeable goodness, is the root of His power to save us…to prepare a place for us…to never cease pursuing us. How does that make you feel? He is the essence of life…. He considers you to be a son and daughter, called by name, to spend all eternity in the heaven of his presence.
Have you ever said or heard that the Bible is outdated… old-fashioned, and not realistically relevant to our modern world? I have.
Yet when I read it…it is still as relevant today as the day it was written. From it comes all the wisdom of the world. All the answers God gave us to live life in holiness before him and man.
Immutability says there is no inconsistency with God. He never changes his character or purpose, so we can always rest in that truth. His Truth.
When I think of Christ. I see how he restores what the locusts have eaten and destroyed.
I see how he bestows new identities and creates a new life for each of us.
I see and can believe He has a plan for every single one of us. Jer 29:11
God has fullness of being,
We see this attribute of God throughout the Bible. “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed” (Malachi 3:6).
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).
He is immutable because He is God.
Finally, what does that mean to us?
He can be trusted. His purposes are unfailing and his promises are unassailable.
It is our source of comfort. But that requires that we accept our insignificance as creatures and
accept God’s never-ending grace.
It confirms his faithfulness to save us.
And that He will always be Holy and just.
As we prepare our hearts for Thanksgiving, let’s meditate on the things of God and the countless benefits he has bestowed on each of us, regardless of our current situation. I pray you stop and enter into the peace and power of our Immutable Savior.
