What is your Spiritual Identity? Vs. What is one’s identity without God? VI
Who are you? How would you answer the question… who am I? Where did you derive your answer? Someone taught you right or wrong…who was it, and what was it?
We may see ourselves in a picture and say that’s me. But that body is not who we are. Right? God put in us His spirit that makes our hearts beat and hunger and yearn for Him.
I am asking those who are in a small group, to meet at someone’s house, pull it up on the big screen, on January 13th at 7pm – 8:30 pm to join the event. Invite a friend, your children, your spouse to join.
I would like to get a little technical to prove a point, with excerpts and definitions by: Jeemin Moon. The secular worldview calls this an identity crisis
The dictionary defines identity as who a person is, or the qualities of a person or group that make them different from others. Every person attempts to prove their uniqueness and worth to others and will change throughout their lifetime. It isn’t just who I think I am, but who I am according to others. (That is a tough hook-up.)
As people associate with each other in society, their identity is often used just like a business card to distinguish themselves from others. Because personal identity is inherently social. For example, different combinations of gender and occupation may result in a different role in the workplace or job opportunities. Both of these factors influence one’s identity formation interrelatedly.
It is not a static but a fluid concept. In other words, it constantly changes as people experience various life changes, just like their version of truth changes based on how they or others feel.
Christian Identity:
Different from worldly identity, Christian identity can be defined as identity in Christ: How God sees a believer through Jesus Christ and His redemptive work. In other words, it is the Creator’s authoritative answer to a believer’s question, “Who am I?” Why? Because Christian identity is a divinely proclaimed reality, it supersedes all the other identities and identity markers that a person or a group may have. This also means that Christ’s followers are more than their race, social status, gender, and nationality since their new identity in Christ supersedes all the worldly markers of identity.
There are many Bible verses that discuss identity in Christ, including:
- 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
- John 1:12: “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”
- Galatians 3:26: “We are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus”
- 1 Peter 2:9: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession.”
In contrast to the worldly identity, here are the characteristics of Christian identity.
First, it shifts one’s focus from inward to outward: It redirects a believer’s purpose of life from serving oneself to serving God and others.
The apostle Paul describes the nature of this fundamental change in Ephesians 2;8: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. … For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them”. This passage clearly shows a believer is God’s “workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,” he or she now ought to live for God and others. While worldly identity defines who a person is according to self or others,
Christian identity defines who a person is according to the Creator. The world keeps people focused on worldly things, while Christian identity drives a believers focus toward heavenly things. Because only the Christian concept can gives a true and eternally valuable answer to the question, “Who am I?”
Second, Christian identity enables and equips believers to evaluate all intrinsic and extrinsic factors in their lives in light of God’s Word.
Establishing one’s identity upon secular standard markers is like building a house on the sand: when the rain falls, and the floods come, and the wind blows and beats against the house of identity, it will fall greatly. The only unshakable foundation is the Word of God, and the house of personal identity which is built upon His Word will not fall “because it had been founded on the rock” (Matt. 7:25).
Lastly, Christian identity is strengthened as a believer’s relationship with God deepens. While a constant change due to various life changes can cause confusion and even identity crises, a Christian identity rooted deeply in the Word of God gets stronger over time as believers’ divine-human relationship is solidified.
Here is the beauty of Christian identity: just as Jesus is the founder and the perfecter of the faith of all believers (Heb. 12:2), He serves as the architect who builds and completes the identity of Christians.
On the foundation of the gospel of Jesus Christ, a Christians’ identity will grow constantly as they experience communion with God through prayer, Bible meditation, and corporate worship.
Questions for Reflection
- What are some of the identity markers that you have adopted to establish your identity? How does each marker influence your identity formation?
- How does identity in Christ enable or compel you to reinterpret your understanding of identity or identity markers? Which ones need to be thrown out and replaced?
- How can my career be a ministry and not just a job?
- Are your standards biblically based or fixed on how one feels?
- How can studying and reading God’s word strengthen your identity and foundation of faith in a God and his truth that never changes?
- Where do you derive your purpose from?
