Love My Sheep
Almost 2,000 years ago, Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me?” When Peter said that he did, Jesus responded, “Feed my sheep.” John 21:17 Three times he asked him that question. I am not sure if he fully got the impact of that until later. How many times has Jesus asked you? Do you love me? Really… how many times? We who love the Lord have a great responsibility to meet the needs of others but we must first lay our troubles at the foot of Christ our Lord. Peter was a common fisherman. Not a college grad like many of us. Perhaps he was like many blue-collar workers I know who have a degree in common sense that you can’t teach in college. But either way. He got it! What is it exactly that we don’t get? Three little words. “Feed My Sheep!” But I so often hear. I don’t know my calling. I don’t know my gifts. I am paralyzed in the spirit of not knowing or I don’t have time. Right now, I hear that crusty drill sergeant that used to be on TV… “MOVE IT!” Feed my sheep. You can do that by serving in a 1000 ways. Help greet people. Help in the parking lot. Go to a men’s or women’s group or a couples ministry or bible study or work in the nursery or with the children or the youth. MOVE IT!.. Is the call.
In Christianese its “FEED MY SHEEP!” DO YOU LOVE ME? LOVE MY SHEEP. DO YOU LOVE ME? SHOW ME SOME LOVE BY LOVING MY CHILDREN.
Come out of the darkness into my marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9
If you have nothing else to share then share your heart. Share your pain and tears and cancer and marriage problems and your prodigals. And you will find that I have other children who love me by feeding my sheep. They will be there for you if you would reach out to me. They will help you past the hiccups of indecision, weak faith, and sin and rebellion, and disobedience. And one day before you know it you will be able to Feed My Sheep too. You will be able to Love My Sheep as I empower you with the many gifts of my Holy Spirit. Come out of your loneliness, come out of your separation. Come out of your pain and depression. Come out of Covid and reengage. Come back to my people and my house. All of this frustration and anger you feel is because you have isolated yourself from me. My church is but a building but in it, I have an army who will walk with you, link arms with you, and by my Spirit bring healing and comfort. And Power!
