When Everything Falls Apart – Where Is Home?
When hard things happen, and before you’ve even recovered, another one comes along. Another disappointment, another loss, another one of those “It’s just not fair!” moments. Where do you go when life becomes so overwhelming that the voice inside you is no longer small and tender, but screaming? Lord, what is the reason for all this? What are You trying to tell me? What purpose could possibly come from circumstances that seem determined to crush the life out of me? Lord, do YOU see what’s happening? Because I don’t know how much longer I can keep doing this.
I’ve talked with too many people lately who are up against it all. Job loss, separation, divorce, prison, bankruptcy, depression, feelings of worthlessness. Maybe your situation isn’t catastrophic. Maybe it’s simply one overwhelming thing after another. But here’s what I don’t want us to miss. Life may be overwhelming, but we don’t have to allow it to overwhelm everything good about being alive. There is still a God who loves us, people who need us, blessings we haven’t noticed, and prayers already answered. How often are we counting those blessings instead of rehearsing our problems?
Romans 8:28 tells us God works all things together for good for those who love Him. (Yeah, I know… how many times have you heard that quoted?) But ALL things, Lord? Even this? Father, I’m hanging on to Your Word as best I can. But sometimes I desperately want You to show me how everything will come together. I want to know we’re going to be okay. And perhaps I’ve been so busy asking God about tomorrow that I’ve overlooked what He’s given me today. An unexpected kindness, someone I love, a beautiful morning, and His mercies, new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23). Those blessings don’t erase our problems. They remind us our problems aren’t the whole story.
Somewhere in the fear and uncertainty, I must decide: Lord, I WILL stand strong in You and the power of Your might. I WILL NOT be moved from my faith by what I see, feel, or fear. I WILL trust You with tomorrow, even when I cannot see how it will work. Can you see the obedience factor? I can’t merely hear His Word. I must lean on it, obey it, and trust it. I’m not saying this because I suddenly feel courageous. Sometimes faith requires a declaration while our knees are still shaking. I will praise You in the sunshine, but especially in the rain. You have never been a fair-weather God, and I refuse to become a fair-weather follower.
I will not surrender my joy simply because the impossible is staring me in the face.
Nehemiah 8:10 reminds us that the joy of the Lord is our strength. Joy isn’t merely our reward when everything works out. It’s God’s provision while we’re still walking through it. And we don’t have to wait until the crisis ends to enjoy His goodness. We can laugh, love, encourage someone, and appreciate what God has already given us. Jesus didn’t come merely to help us survive. He came that we might have abundant life (John 10:10). He is our living Savior, and the Holy Spirit is our Helper and Comforter (John 14:16–17).
What if the peace you’ve been searching for isn’t waiting at the end of your circumstances, but is found in the presence of the One walking through them with you? Please don’t let that truth escape you today. Jesus promises His peace in John 14:27. Not temporary relief when everything finally works out, but the assurance that we are never abandoned. And in that same chapter, Jesus speaks of preparing a place for us in His Father’s house. But John 14:23 also tells us that the Father and Son will make their home with those who love Him. Think about that!
The God preparing a home for you in eternity also desires to make His home with you today.
You may not know where your next paycheck will come from or how tomorrow will unfold. But Jesus still invites the weary and burdened to come to Him for rest (Matthew 11:28). Come confused, come frightened, come with unanswered questions. But come! Maybe you don’t need another explanation nearly as much as you need to know you’re held. I believe these words may be reaching you or someone you love for a reason. The Father hasn’t lost sight of you. And while you’re trusting Him, don’t forget to live. Love someone, enjoy a beautiful afternoon, thank Him for something small, and let yourself experience the joy of belonging to Jesus and appreciating the gifts he has given you..
Because our true home isn’t merely a destination awaiting us in heaven. Home is where we are known, loved, welcomed, and held. Each of those are gift. And in Jesus Christ, we can begin living in that home today,
even while the storms are still raging outside.
Questions to Carry With You
