Human beings have no hopeof becoming their own personal saviors.

A vow is a solemn promise to do something. A vow has power and is binding. Long-term – short-term. Beneficial or nonbeneficial. Vows outside of marriage, are words spoken typically in great desperation or in the hopefulness of one's future. These are things that you declare and promise yourself.  At the moment they may seem appropriate but as we change or even forget about those words they are still alive either setting a boundary or filtering the way you view life.  They become a stronghold around your future based on what you think you wanted or didn’t. And so often in the heat of that emotion these words…these vows become an invisible prison limiting your life and relationship because of their power. The power of words. The power of inner vows.  The added power of those spoken in anger or out of real hurt, frustration, or desperation becomes a lifelong shackle of limitations based on words and promises made in haste and desperation.

Are these occasional instances? Maybe not as occasionally as one would think.

Inner vows always damage a relationship and also take you further away from God. WHY?  Because we haven’t talked to God about them.  We are declaring “Our Will” over his.  Surrendering all to Christ has always been Gods calling for us. Trusting God enough to let go of the control. The forever battle between flesh and spirit. You know our anger comes because we feel we have lost control. Examples of inner vows: "I'll never talk to my kids like that." "I will never get my heart broken again.” – I will never let someone talk like that to me! – I will always provide for my family so that we will never be in want no matter what I have to do…

I understand how one thinks those things.  I have said each of them at one time or another and thought that promise I made was a good one.  I WILLED IT! I declared to myself inwardly and out loud. That THIS will be so!  End of discussion!

My answer to myself and to you in just One Word -“Surrender", Break those words.  Break those vows in Jesus' name!  Give yourself over to what God wants for your life.  Not what you think or imagine in the limitedness of your own small thinking.  Can you view the future?  Do you really know what is best for you or what God wants for you? Galatians 2:20 says “I have been crucified with Christ: and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me, and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me".

Truthfully through most of my life, I never considered the roots of my own hurt and how my verbal or inner responses to those hurtful or scary events colored me…or my relationship with Jesus and others. Have You? If we ask the Holy Spirit to remind us and bring to our recall these past words and vows…He will.(Write them down and start keeping a list)  He will restore your inner self, and as you break these bonds and the power of those words your next step will be a breakthrough in the most amazing ways.

You can face your past and become forever free!

Would you consider that freedom from your past is based upon the premise that the past isn't past until it has been reconciled in Christ? Not just because you don’t remember it anymore.Without properly addressing the pain and problems of our past, our present and future are adversely affected.

These inner vows and declarations, even the ones that sound positive, will stop us from submitting to God’s greater plans and blessings for us. We end up setting a trap for our souls through our vows.  I want you to think about this.  Aren’t they a form of idolatry?  Are you trusting in God in these areas? But Dennis, I never thought about that…I didn’t know.  Just because we didn’t know doesn’t negate the impact of something, does it? Just because we didn’t mean to doesn’t mean there are no consequences, does it?

Don’t you agree that only God can protect us and shield us and show us how we should stand against life’s pain and disappointments?

Do we as humans, have any hope of becoming our own personal redeemers?

Yet, we have all been caught in the trap.    I will be successful!  I will never be alone again.  I will never let someone do that to me ever again.  Isn’t that a fleshly response to unfulfilled expectations or our unmet needs?  What is God saying here?  Whose lead are we taking?Proverbs 20:25 NIV It is a trap to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider one’s vows. Again, an inner vow is usually the result of unhealthy or fleshly responses to hurts, unfulfilled expectations, and unmet needs. Only God can shield us and show us how to stand up against life’s disappointments and pain. When we fail to turn to God, we end up relying on our own limited strength. This creates a lot of stress and strife as a result.
