The Bible in the Sky

Two years ago, we lost a well-known songwriter, pastor, and author—Jack Hayford. However, back in 1977, he and his wife attended the 25th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation. He was deeply moved by the splendor of the event, the majesty of the celebration, the joy of the people, and the sheer magnificence of the palace. As they drove away, overwhelmed by what he had witnessed, he couldn’t help but equate it to the sovereignty of our reigning Christ.
One word stood out in his mind: Majesty!

Turning to his wife, he asked her to write down his thoughts as he dictated the lyrics to what became a beloved hymn:

Majesty! Worship His Majesty!
Unto Jesus be all glory, honor, and praise.
Majesty! Kingdom Authority
Flows from His throne unto His own—
His anthem raise!

Do you remember this song? (Can you hear the melody?) It became a staple of faith for many of us. But let’s take a moment to truly reflect on this word—Majesty. Even this powerful word barely scratches the surface of God’s splendor.

God’s Bible in the Sky

People often say, “I have never seen God, nor heard His voice. I have no absolute proof that He even exists.” But to that, I say—look up!

I know, I know—you might think you already understand where I’m going with this. But bear with me for a few moments, because I wonder if we have lost some of our awe of God.

The heavens declare His glory, visible from every nation, every continent, over land and sea. The masterpiece He has painted in the sky is one we have become too familiar with—so much so that we hardly notice it anymore.

Have we dulled ourselves to its brilliance? Have we let it become ordinary? Like a penny on the ground, overlooked and unappreciated—yet doubling it every day for 27 days would yield a million dollars. The sky, the constellations, and the universe itself have been expanding since the dawn of time—at the speed of light (186,000 miles per second). The moon is only one light second away. And yet, do we even pause to marvel at the sheer majesty of it?

God’s Signs in the Heavens

Genesis 1:14 says:
“And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.’”

Notice anything unusual? Of the four things mentioned—signs, seasons, days, and years—one seems out of place. Signs.

What is a sign? By definition, it is an object, quality, or event that indicates the probable presence or occurrence of something else. A sign tells a story, provides information. Isn’t that what God said? That the heavens were created to speak—to be a revelation, a prophecy written across the sky.

Think of it as notes on the manuscript of a great symphony—each new note unveiling a greater revelation when placed in the proper sequence. The heavens are not just random lights; they are divine expressions of God’s ongoing revelation.

Psalm 19:1 tells us:
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

Listen to those words—declare and proclaim. The display of His glory is constant, ongoing. The universe continues to expand, chanting His name and grandeur. Without a single word, the heavens eloquently convey His majesty.

Should Not We?

1 Timothy 1:17 says:
“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.”

How many times have we read this verse without truly absorbing it? King eternal. Immortal. Invisible. The only wise God. Paul concludes with “Amen”—a solemn affirmation and agreement. But do we live our lives as an “Amen” to this truth?

When we walk in the majesty of His presence, shouldn’t it change us? Without a word or a sound, just the sheer majesty of His presence should move us.

Take time today to marvel at the notes written in the sky. Don’t let them become ordinary or mundane. Don’t take a divine masterpiece and treat it like an everyday, common penny.

Until we recognize the majesty of God in our own lives, how can we fully give praise to the Eternal King?  Easter is upon us.  What have you done to prepare to celebrate His Majesty?
