What God Says About The Value of a Moment.

We don’t know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.  Why is it that we don’t fully appreciate a moment until it has passed? Leaving friends, going to a new job, or moving to a new city, or the finality of someone dying. Returning to a photo album, we get to reflect again on the time together. Sometimes we can know cerebrally that the moment may even be unforgettable, but we often regret not spending more time simply appreciating it.  And aren’t all of us guilty at some level of too often not being present? And isn’t that what we are talking about? Too many gifted moments that we don’t recognize
until they are past.

  1. Today Is a Gift
    • “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)
God doesn’t promise us tomorrow. He calls us to rejoice today—in this moment. Each day is sacred because it’s a gift from Him. Why do we take today for granted?
  2. Don’t Worry About Tomorrow
    • “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34)
Jesus taught us not to live in regret over yesterday or anxiety over tomorrow. He wants us to be fully present in today’s grace.
  3. Open Eyes to the Eternal in the Ordinary
    • “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)
Wisdom comes when we slow down enough to see the beauty in the fleeting moment. The “ordinary” moments of everyday life often become the extraordinary treasures we cherish later.  A baby who first starts to walk.  The moment we asked them to marry.
  4. The Presence of God Makes Every Moment Sacred
    • “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
Asking God to open your eyes.  Practicing stillness opens our spiritual eyes. Meditating on the things above helps us see what God sees…in the now. When we pause in the present, we become aware that God Himself is here, with us, in the moment.  Think about that.

Ordinary vs. Extraordinary

So often, we rush past life…measuring worth by accomplishments, promotions, or milestones—when in fact, the simple, unglamorous days can hold the most profound meaning.

  • A conversation with a friend.
  • A sunset we almost ignored.
  • A child’s laugh.
  • The warmth of worship in a small gathering.

The problem? We treat these treasures as common instead of holy. We can even treat God like that at times. But with open eyes and an awakened spirit, we begin to see them as God’s gifts, moments designed to shape us, soften us, and grow us in love.  And what is life about anyway?

Living Without Regret

Andy Bernard’s words echo a universal regret: we don’t know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. But as believers, we don’t have to live that way. God invites us to walk with Him now, to see with eternal perspective, to treasure each breath as a sacred offering.

Paul reminds us:

  • “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:15–16)

Every moment is an opportunity to live with gratitude, kindness, and awareness of God’s presence.

How many times have you had to refocus to be present?

What will you take away from being present right now?

To be spiritually awake is to live fully present—with gratitude, with love, with God at the center. That’s how we turn the ordinary into extraordinary and live without regret.

Questions for Reflection

  1. Where in my life am I rushing past the moment instead of rejoicing in it?
  2. What “ordinary” moment this week could I treat as extraordinary by being fully present with God in it?
  3. Am I more focused on what’s next (success, goals, comfort) than on who God is calling me to be right now?
  4. If I looked back at today, five years from now, what would I wish I had slowed down to notice?
  5. How can I invite God’s presence into the small, unglamorous routines of my life so they become sacred instead of ordinary?
