The Power of His Name: Why God’s Names Matter and How They Strengthen Our Faith.
Do you know the story behind your name…why your parents chose it or what it means?
I wish I knew why my parents chose the name Dennis. My father, Conrad, was nicknamed “Happy” because of his joyful personality. My sister Barbara was named after my mother’s adopted aunt.
Names carry stories, memories, and identity.
But in Scripture, names carry even greater weight.
When God gives someone a name—or changes their name—it reveals destiny. Abram becomes Abraham, “father of many nations.” Simon becomes Peter, “the rock.”
In the Bible, names don’t just identify, they define.
And when it comes to God, one name is not enough.
He is so vast, holy, powerful, and merciful that no single name can capture who He is. Scripture gives us hundreds of His names, each revealing a different dimension of His character.
The Bible tells us:
“Those who know Your name trust in You,
for You, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek You.” — Psalm 9:10
To know His name is to trust His nature.
To call on His name is to rely on His promise.
To understand His name is to anchor your faith in His character.
Let’s look at five short anchors to teach you the power of His Name.
1. His Names Reveal Who He Is
God’s names aren’t titles—they’re revelations of His heart and His power.
- Elohim — Creator (Genesis 1:1)
- Yahweh — “I AM,” the covenant-keeping God (Exodus 3:14)
- El Shaddai — God Almighty, All-Sufficient (Genesis 17:1)
Every name of God answers a human need:
Weak? Call on El Shaddai, the God who is more than enough.
Anxious? Call on Jehovah Shalom, the God of peace.
Lost or unseen? Call on El Roi, the God who sees you.
2. His Names Strengthen Our Faith
When we pray His names, we remind ourselves of who He has always been.
David said: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” — Psalm 20:7
Fear weakens when you pray Jehovah Shammah — “The LORD is there.”
Lack shrinks when you pray Jehovah Jireh — “The LORD will provide.”
Sickness trembles when you pray Jehovah Rapha — “The LORD who heals.”
His name is your confidence.
3. His Names Draw Us Into Relationship
God’s names are personal and intimate. But…
He invites us to call Him Father—Abba (Romans 8:15).
Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd, Bread of Life, Light of the World, True Vine, and Resurrection and Life.
Each name is a doorway into a deeper relationship.
But most believers rarely slow down to consider the power behind these names.
4. His Names Are Weapons in Spiritual Battle
Proverbs 18:10 declares: “The name of the LORD is a strong tower;
the righteous run to it and are safe.”
When you declare His name, you strengthen your spirit, push back darkness, and align yourself with truth.
5. His Names Anchor Us in Crisis When life feels unstable, His names remind you that He does not change.
- He was Jehovah Jireh before your need.
- He was Jehovah Rapha before your diagnosis.
- He was Jehovah Shalom before your storm.
He is who He has always been.
He will be who He has always been.
His name is your assurance.
