Is our Spirit contaminated when we sin? Part Two
Yesterday we said that God can look at us and love us even when we sin because he looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7
When we come before God and say, “Abba Father”, God is not looking at our sins in the ways that we failed. He is NOT saying, how dare you come before me in your sin! That’s because we didn’t come before him in our sin – we came before him in our perfect, sinless spirit and in truth. But how can that be?
God gave us a new spirit in our rebirth. No matter what we’ve done in our flesh, our spirit is pure, holy, complete, spotless, and undefiled. Think about this. God can look at me and have fellowship with me just exactly the same as He would with our Lord Jesus Christ! (Can you just let that settle in for a minute!)
What hinders our relationship with God is that our soul and our body are not pure yet. When we are wallowing in sin we’re going to defile our conscience and have a hard time walking in spiritual truth.
1 Corinthians 2:14 says that the natural man cannot receive the things of the spirit. If you and I are constantly living in sin we’re not going to feel like our spirit is pure. God still sees it as pure but we can’t say that or believe that because we are carnally minded.
That’s why many of us are not able to perceive and walk in the spirit realm, experiencing who we are in Christ Jesus. We are locked into the physical realm when we live in sin.
I believe that because our spirits are pure they don’t need to grow. But the growth must take place in our souls. The spiritual truths of God are already a reality and complete in our spirits but our mind and our emotions will need to learn and begin to practice them. The Bible called this partaking of the divine nature, or becoming like God, thinking, speaking, and acting the way he does.
Two Peter 1:4 “Through these, he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature,”
I pray you are starting to get a hold of this. When we renew our minds through God‘s word and spend time in his presence, forming an intimate relationship with him, the purity and perfection in our spirit will begin to transform our souls.
And when our souls begin to line up with our spirits, our flesh loses its power to get us to sin. Our flesh becomes subject to our souls,
which have become subject to our spirits.
Therefore we overcome sin because we are acting like Jesus
Galatians 4:6 “Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.'”
This is the big picture of being new creatures in Christ, but what happens when we mess up today? Instead of saying, I’m not worthy of you and run away from God, we’ll say, God through Jesus blood, I am running back into your arms and thanking you and praising you for forgiving me and cleansing me from all unrighteousness.
God loves you! He doesn’t grade sin! Sin doesn’t affect how much God loves you! Because Jesus’ blood covers every sin you have committed and will ever commit.
Romans 8:15 “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
