Could your light, in truth, be some shade of darkness.
Putting on the belt of truth and the breastplate is fundamental to the fight. But when we search scripture more deeply, we find the Holy Spirit leaves a trail of instructions AND warnings for us.
“We each have a key task to complete before we set out to fight evil: discerning the darkness in our own hearts. Jesus said, “Make sure the light you have is not really darkness.” Luke 11:35.
We have spoken that the righteous motives of our hearts are as fundamental as our actions. It reminds me of taking the plank out of your own eye before you judge another. But He doubles down here. BEFORE you set out to fight… He says, to DISCERN the darkness IN OUR OWN HEARTS! Sure, we live in a dark and evil world. (God knows!) Satan’s darkness is moral, not physical even though it will eventually be displayed in all its ugliness. God knows Satan and the darkness, all his schemes, and that he will spread his dark disease and sow destruction anywhere moral darkness is allowed.
It’s clear here, he will invade and take advantage of every weakness within a believer to sow his seeds of darkness. His goal is to invade the goodness and light of every believer and get you to relegate the breastplate of righteousness to a metaphor. “BUT GOD”, has another word to further bolster your knowledge of God’s truth. He says: STOP! By the power of the Holy Spirit within us…DISCERN… the darkness within… Make sure… double-check your motives… that the light YOU SEE is not really darkness! (We are great justifiers, aren’t we?) If at any time you are not sure, we each should have an accountability partner to help …
and be commissioned to ask the hard questions.
This armor business is no child’s game of Tonka toys. Darkness is real. It resides all around us. This Armor of truth and righteousness is there to protect us… even from ourselves.
Meditate on the scripture above. Let it sink in!
Lord, you know my weaknesses, and if I’m honest… I do too.
Thank you for your Spirit within me who will guide me into all truth.
Help me to not settle.
Help me to not ALLOW the darkness in!
