Hearing God…Questions of a Christian Seeking God!
1. Humbly ask God if there is anything that is hindering you from hearing Him.
Is there sin in your life that could be blocking you or standing between you and God? Pride, Anger, Self-Centeredness, Idolatry, Porn, Adultery, Lukewarmness, laziness, disobedience? Confess it!
Certain behaviors stand in the way of our prayers ( 1 Peter 3:7 ). God knows that you are not sinlessly perfect & knows you have struggles. What delights God is when you acknowledge your weakness ( 1 John 1:8-9 ).
2. Have you ever labored or cried out to God for anything?
(over some period of time) What was it about?. What was that time in your life like? Did you walk alone?
The person who cries out to God gets His attention. In several places in the Psalms, we read of King David crying out to God. The same is true of the Prophets and, astonishingly, the same is true of the Lord Jesus. “During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears … and He was heard because of His reverent submission.” (Hebrews 5:7)
3. Do you have unanswered prayer in your life?
Share them at your dinner table or with your small group. Commit to praying for each other tonight and during the weeks ahead.
God knows everything. He knows every thought you have ever had, and every thought you ever will have. God hears silent prayer ( 1 Samuel 1:12-13 ). But God tests the strength of your desire. Raise your voice, and call out to God. This is also not beyond you, and it does prove your sincerity and desire. God will speak. Usually, it is “the still small voice” – an impression in your spirit, but it is clear and concise nevertheless.
4. Do you expect to hear from God when you pray?
As you wait on Him and respond to Him, you will grow to know His voice consistently. “I had a peace about it”. That understanding will grow over time with your belief. Your mind might not know the answer but you will receive peace if you are flowing in God’s will for your life.
Can you remember and describe a time of prayer when your prayer changed YOU?
5. What can you do to remember God’s faithfulness to you in the past? How can you remind yourself of God’s care and protection? Can you see how keeping a journal helps you remember?
6. Worship. When we worship God, we are reminded of His power, glory, and majesty. Worship allows us to see how small our problems are in comparison to how big God really is. Worship establishes the rightful hierarchy of power in our lives – God on the throne and us at His service.
Did you ever sense God gave you a leading, scripture, or direction during a worshipful time? Describe it. Did you obey it? Why?
Lord, I ask you that if there is any past sin or event hindering me from hearing your voice to forgive me. Repeat after me: Forgive me …
(and quietly think of your sin that may be obstructing you. .Pause)
I lay it at your altar,…..
Open up my mind and spirit to hear from you. Help my faith to trust you more, to believe, that you want to talk to me.
Lord, I want to talk to you today. Amen.
