Leadership: A Masters’ course in leading a team and leading a family! Part II

A leader has to learn and grow in many areas. Most grow thru their own limited experiences. A few will be deliberate by taking classes or courses to hone these skills. Some of our parents were poor leaders although they loved us. Some of us had some great mentors but may not be so polished in passing it on.
Or they may have grown stale without an opportunity to hone those skills.

Yesterday we discussed. 1. Being Prayed up. 2. Lead with humility and transparency 3. Listening authentically.
Today we take the next step in developing our skills.

4. Ask Questions: And then ask better ones. Have fun. Ask open questions … but not always. Less is more. Create Safety and Trust.
a. Someone said, “Powerful questions are a reflection of committed listening and understanding the other person’s perspective that is confirmed through paraphrasing. This suggests a progression from listening, paraphrasing for understanding, and then asking powerful questions that yield clarity or mediation of thinking.”
Open Ended Questions:
b. Ask the respondent to think and reflect.
c. Draw out their opinions and feelings.
d. They hand control and trust of the conversation to the respondent.
e. Ask them what motivates them and what discourages them. (work on taking the discouraging out and focus on the encouragement)
Berger says. “Questioning engages us in life and learning and helps us stop looking at things through the same familiar lens”

Don’t be afraid to ask the tougher question but be sure to know the person you’re asking first.

5. Motivation: Is contagious so is the lack of it. If we are not motivated, we won’t be able to lead a team or a family well.
a. By knowing what’s important to them you can turn it into a driving force for motivation.
b. True motivation only appears by overcoming difficulties.

6. Push away the negative: Don’t let the negativity of one drag your
team down. Be uplifting. Turn it around with Gods’ word

7. Celebrating Small Achievements: It’s fun.
Its motivation. It inspires them and others to do more and go further.
And will help others get involved and improve.
A. Congratulate but don’t point fingers.
Offer God scriptures and prayers.

8. Notice and Pinpoint motivators: Look for ways to encourage and build
their leadership skills. Make the development of each person an
intentional priority.

9. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. We all do.
Be humble, make it right as best you can.

10. Team Building: Strengthen the team/family by doing activities to change
the daily or normal routine. Get out. Have fun. Build relationships.

Lastly, stay in prayer. Persevere. Giving up can never be an option.
Don’t leave a project or person half-finished or half helped. If you can’t finish something or it is out of your wheelhouse, pull in help as needed.

It is all around you. Ask for help!

What about you? What have you done to improve being a good leader or parent? I pray this will be a start to be better using Christ as our example.

Will you not stop and pray with us and your family for one hour this week?
He listens and will respond!
