“The desire for God is written in the human heart.”

“Because we have been made by God for the purpose of a relationship with God, we have within us a desire to seek God. We yearn to know our Creator, we desire his goodness, and we are drawn toward the purpose for which we have been made” Liz HoefferleThe psalmist says, “Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun” (Psalm 37:4-6).Here we see that God can literally plant His own desires into the heart of man, the heart that, without Him, is desperately wicked and deceitful. He replaces the evil with good and sets our hearts on the path toward Him, removing our own desires and replacing them with His. This only happens when we come to Him in repentance and accept the gift of salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ. At that point, He removes our hearts of stone and replaces them with hearts of flesh (Ezekiel 11:19).

Since the fall of mankind into sin, the world has functioned as follows:

– People choose to sin in their hearts, commit a sinful deed, and hurt someone;- The victims become heart-broken and either remain burdened by sorrow forever or decide to seek revenge and, in doing so, become just like the perpetrators, they choose to sin in their heart, commit a sinful deed, and hurt someone;- Most perpetrators are heart-broken individuals who choose carelessness and continue the cycle of sin and victimization of others. The man who follows his heart is defined a fool in the Bible because the heart is not a source of wisdom and it is not a guide to follow.

Proverbs 28:26 – "He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered."

Jesus also said, “What you say flows from what is in your heart” (Luke 6:45). If your heart is hard, then it will show by what you say. If you are bitter, then you will find yourself talking about it, because bitter people love to spread it around. How many times have you said something, brazen, a bit ugly, profane, and said…Where did that come from?  I have!  If fact at times it startled me.  Have you ever told your children:  If you plant potatoes what do you get?  What about carrots?  What about anger? Or unforgiveness or selfishness or deceit?  Need I go on?

People have said as I have… follow your heart.  This is based upon some imagined truth that our hearts will never lie to us. Or it is a trustworthy source of wisdom.  Sometimes we say pray about it…but in the end, do what you think is right. Yikes, have you considered the deeper ramification of this?

It's appealing, and popular because you have the freedom to decide what you think and feel at that moment.   The bottom line, do what pleases you!

When we tell a non believer that there is nothing good in their heart, they cannot accept it.  There is no foundation for them to do so.  So don't.  There will come a time.  Even many believers believe that all the good deeds in their life are  “pretty good”  God can’t just discount my goodness…can he?  Look, all of us can say that…there is truth there, but we are forgetting a deeper truth set forth in God's word.  Our hearts are so depraved in that we are born with a sinful nature that corrupts everything.  Can you drop a color of die in the water and not color the whole glass?  Our thinking, our nature is one of sinfulness.  Did you ever have to train a child to say “Mine?”

2 Corinthians 5:17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!Ezekiel 36:26 I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.Bottom line; We need a new heart that only the Spirit can give you.  That happens when we put our faith in Jesus. And then slowly as our love grows so does our overwhelming desire to please God.  Glorify God.  Consider God first.  Consider others first.   One day your love will be so broad, so high that it can be shed abroad.   As we continue to seek God in prayer and bible reading to learn God’s nature we also discover the truth of our nature. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

And WHEN  a person’s heart feels like going against the Bible, ignore the heart and trust the Bible.  I pray you ask the Lord to help you to obey.  The power will only come from Him.  Not you willing it to happen!  Humble yourself before God and he will raise you up.
