The Spirit came with power … for you!
(1 Samuel 16:13 – 23) verses 13 and 14 speak of two contrasting activities of the Holy Spirit. 1. “The spirit of the Lord came upon David and gave him power. 2. the spirit of the Lord came upon Saul and took away his power.”
God told Samuel, “To rise and anoint him: he is the one”. Wow-what Samuel must’ve felt like…because he really understood its meaning. He surely must’ve stood there in awe and reverence and holiness in pouring the oil on his head. Although David’s vision might have been blinded by the oil,
God’s vision was crystal clear. 1 Samuel 16:11 “I will Send you to Jessie Where I have provided a king”. The Hebrew word for provided is Ra’ah – it means to say, to look at, view, inspect, regard, to perceive: to feel; to experience. And in 2nd Chronicles 16:9 “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.”
When I read this verse in Chronicles 16:9 “the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth to show himself so strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to him”. I am not just thinking about David … I’m thinking about Us. I’m thinking about you and your spouse and your children and your children’s children. The spirit of the living God many thousand years ago looked throughout the whole earth and it fell upon an obscure a little village called Bethlehem. And then he found one heart – one like unto his own. He found a heart tendered to that little sheep and he showed himself strong on behalf of that heart just like he promised.
Each of us has the responsibility of our own little sheep. They may be infants or lambs they may be mature and now grown. God’s eyes searched the entire world and he selected you and he selected them and his spirit is within them for nothing can separate us from the love of God anymore.
David sat around a campfire and sang songs to his God. The Heavens were full of the raiment Of God himself. He is the same today but are we looking, sitting, waiting, meditating…singing? Are we so lost in the love of Almighty God himself that we are lost in the ecstasy of it all? Or is that just too much embellishment and hype for the God of the universe?
We each raised our children in the innocence of their youth. They were selfish, self-centered, and completely dependent upon us. They became what we poured into them and on them. But one thing was certain God’s spirit was on you and them from the moment God himself selected them. That call is without repentance.
John 14:16-17 this is our insurance. “The spirit of the Lord will live within me and I will know him. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth.”
Perhaps it’s time we call the family together again. Time to share communion and a rededication of our lives as a family. It’s time for a special blessing upon each of their lives. From the youngest to the oldest… let us bless each of our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Let us pour forth the oil of the Holy Spirit upon them again Or maybe for the first time. It is never too late.
We should invite them all for dinner and gather everyone around the table to break bread and even perhaps sing a couple of songs and set a new tradition and a new memory as we receive the spirit of the holy God into our families in a new and living way. I believe that begins with the blessings of the family. Pray with me and your family for this special gathering and the blessings of the family.
