Two Kinds of Fields
“For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life”. –
Galatians 6:8
This “field” places its emphasis on the (physical realm as understood by man’s intellect). It is influenced by the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Seeds planted into this field will reap corruption.
He describes the second field as the Spirit. This place is a conjunction of the natural and supernatural realms. It includes the spiritual realm along with the emotional and physical realms. This “field” places its emphasis on relationship with God and is understood by the spirit. It is influenced by the fruit of the Tree of Life. Seeds planted into this field will reap eternal life.
Plant in Faith
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap,
if we do not give up”. – Galatians 6:9
The harvest is predictable because God cannot be mocked.
I have seen people worry about physical symptoms and plant seeds of fear. First, they seek answers from the sinful nature (physical realm and intellect) and respond in fear.
Faith sown to the flesh is not much better The flesh becomes the highest authority, and the person will have a harvest that is limited by that authority. Faith in the flesh produces a crop of inability, failure, disappointment, and purposelessness.
There are some that believe faith is the ultimate power tool for mankind. Sometimes we refer to this mindset as “name it and claim it” or “blab it and grab it” because it is based on man’s positive mental attitude. While the Bible commends positive thinking (Philippians 4:8), it expects a person to use the Truth of God as the standard, rather than their self-referential bias or opinion. For instance, riches gained through positive thinking become a snare that enslaves a person. Wealth gained as a gift from the Heavenly Father is a pure blessing.
Fear sown in the spiritual realm produces deception, control, religiosity, and hypocrisy. It produces false responsibility which leads to performance-based relating without any possibility of reaching the standard. This leads to failure, blaming, anger, guilt, shame, and other responses that destroy relationships.
For example, a man I know has sown fear into his understanding of God. His law-based living is self-defined, and his relationships suffer because of it. He is not good enough, and neither is anyone else. Notice the conflict that occurs when you plant seeds of destruction into a field designed for eternal life.
No wonder there is constant pain for those that sow fear into this field.
Faith sown to the Spirit brings truth and eternal life together for a bountiful harvest of good fruit. God is able to match up responsibility and authority to equip each person for their ultimate purpose. Then the seeds generate life with thirty-fold, sixty-fold, and one hundred-fold returns.
Plant Bountifully
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
2 Corinthians 9:6
Imagine that you are the sower. (And you are!) What kind of seeds do you keep in your bag, fear or faith? What field do you walk on when you plant them, the flesh, or the Spirit? How liberally do you sow, sparingly or bountifully?
God is not mocked. You will reap what you sow.
What is in your bag, and where are you walking?
I want to have a bag of pure faith seeds!
I will remove any seeds of fear that come to my attention.
Filtering the seeds has to be done when you put them in the bag,
not when you broadcast them.
I want to walk on the field of the Spirit, where the soil is ready to receive my seeds and the crop is guaranteed to be bountiful eternal life.
I want to reach in my bag and take out seeds of faith by the handful, and throw them out with a great deal of enthusiasm. I want to sow lots of good seeds in good soil and reap more victory than anyone can ask or imagine!
(You can only do that by pouring in God’s Word!)
Faith is the essence of things hoped for and the evidence of things not yet seen! Hebrews 11:1
