10 Righteous People could have Saved Sodom and Gomorrah!
Those of us who believe the promises of God and Live for His Glory cannot sit by watching while the most important spiritual battle of our generation is being fought. I don’t know how large this storm is that the Holy Spirit warned us about on 2/8 and 2/9. But it frightened me as I was writing it. My wife was really shaken. Has this to do with our Nation and the new direction it has taken? Is it an economic or spiritual downturn that is coming? I don’t know, but he said we could stop the brunt of it IF we would come together and pray as families. Abraham heard God’s word that he would destroy Sodom and Gomorrah but he kept going back and actually pressing God. He asked, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? He returned again and asked if I can find just 10 righteous. But he could not. (Genesis 18:23-25) 18:32) Genesis 19:29 states, “So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham pleas and sent Lot (his nephew) out when he overthrew the cities.” Abraham certainly wanted to see his own extended family protected from God’s judgment. Isn’t that what the Spirit is calling us to do? Call your family together. Pray and intercede. Join with your extended family. Can you find 50 Righteous to join you? How about 10? Or do you think that is just irrelevant for today?
A revival can begin with the repentant heart of ONE! Just one.
The kingdoms of Sodom and Gomorrah were allied with the cities of Admah, Zeboim, and Bela. These five cities, also known as the “cities of the plain”. They were situated on the Jordan River plain in the southern region of the land of Canaan. The plain was compared to the garden of Eden[Gen.13:10] as being well-watered and green, suitable for grazing livestock. Divine judgment was passed upon them and four of them were consumed by fire and brimstone.
Neighboring Zoar (Bela) was the only city to be spared. In Abrahamic religions, Sodom and Gomorrah have become synonymous with impenitent sin, and their fall with a proverbial manifestation of divine retribution.[5][6][Jude 1:7] The Bible mentions that the cities were destroyed for their sins, haughtiness, egoism, and sexual perversion. Do you draw any parallels to the land they call Babylon? America?
In Matthew 10:1–15, cf. Luke 10:1–12, Jesus declares certain cities more damnable than Sodom and Gomorrah, due to their lack of response to Jesus’ disciples: “And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.”(KJV) In Matthew 11:20–24, Jesus prophesies the fate of some cities where he did some of his works (KJV): “And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to Hell: for if the mighty works which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for thee” In 2 Peter 2:4–10, Peter says that just as God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and saved Lot, he will deliver godly people from temptations and punish the wicked on Judgement Day. Solomon 10:6–8 refers to the Five Cities: Wisdom rescued a righteous man when the ungodly were perishing; he escaped the fire that descended on the Five Cities. For because they passed wisdom by, they not only were hindered from recognizing the good but also left for mankind a reminder of their folly, so that their failures could never go unnoticed.
Ezra says that Abraham prayed for the people of Sodom. God has called us to pray. It wasn’t an ask… it was a call… A warning… that we might be spared the brunt of the storm. Meaning God has our back unless we turn our back on him.
Can I ask, what is your spirit telling you right now? Do you feel the fear of the Lord?… The Respect of His word and warning? If not, what does that say of our spiritual condition? (I am emotional as I write these words to you. I feel the weight of my pen as I lean not on my own understanding and beg you to listen and obey.
Bring your family and children into this sacred circle of relationship, prayer, and repentance.
Finally, consider how God did answer Abraham’s request by rescuing Lot and his daughters. Although Abraham’s mediatory work did not result in the sparing of the cities, it did bring about the salvation of Abraham’s nephew. Abraham’s prayers on behalf of others were important, just as our prayers are today.
